Three mischievous boys set off in the sweltering heat of a Saturday afternoon in search of something exciting to do. Tom, the oldest among them, was the leader. Seeing a cat, he suggested to the others to chase it. The boys corned the cat in any alley. Grinning, Jack was only too glad to see the discarded objects on the ground near a dust-bin. Looking at the others the same thought resounded in their heads – they had ready ammunition to attack the cat.
“What luck!” His brother, Joe stuttered and jumped with joy. Picking up an empty can, he hurled it at the cat. The poor animal screeched in agony. That seemed to amuse them. The boys continued to attack it with all sorts of objects and even sticks. When they ran out of ammunition, they started to kick it. “Stop it!” a voice barked that they stopped mistreating the cat.
Afraid that they would be identified, the boys fled the alley immediately. The stranger was none other than Mr Tan, the school discipline master. He was boiling with rage that the boys has ill-treated a poor, helpless animal. He picked up the bleeding and half-dead cat and rushed it to the nearest veterinarian, hoping that he would be in time to save it.
Mr Tan returned to the alley to look for clues that would lead him to the three mischievous boys. He was in luck. From the corner of his eyes, he spotted an identification card near a dustbin. The face in the photograph looked familiar. It was identified by a form teacher and Tom was called up. When confronted, Tom broke down and gave away the identities of the other two culprits. The discipline master gave the boys a dressing down.
They were caned in public for their disgraceful act. The message that Mr Tan sent to the whole school was “Be kind to animals or else…”
